The Importance of Being Visible
In 2016, Salt Lake City made history by renaming a section of 900 South as Harvey Milk Boulevard, the first street in Utah to honor an openly gay leader. Championed by Equality Utah and supported by city leaders, the renaming paid tribute to Harvey Milk, one of the nation’s first openly gay elected officials and a symbol of courage, hope, and authenticity. For Utah’s LGBTQ+ community, the moment was transformative: the city itself now carried the name of a man whose life’s work was to fight for equality and visibility.
Banners of Hope & Visibility
The first phase of the Harvey Milk Visibility Project brings 100 banners to Harvey Milk Boulevard, each one highlighting the contributions of Utah LGBTQ+ community members and allies. These banners showcase artists, activists, leaders, and everyday Utahns whose courage and work have strengthened the state’s LGBTQ+ community.
By weaving their stories into the fabric of the city, the banners transform Harvey Milk Boulevard into more than a street name—it becomes a living, breathing gallery of progress and resilience. Passersby are reminded daily that equality in Utah has been carried forward by countless individuals whose impact deserves to be remembered and celebrated.
Our Honorees
“The naming of Harvey Milk Boulevard was more than symbolic. It was a declaration that LGBTQ+ Utahns are a vital part of this community, and that our stories deserve to be visible in the very streets we walk every day.”
—Troy Williams, Executive Director of Equality Utah

Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Together, the 2016 street renaming and the 2023 Harvey Milk Visibility Project form two powerful chapters of the same story. The first established a landmark in the heart of Salt Lake City. The second ensures that landmark continues to grow in meaning by amplifying local voices and sharing the living history of Utah’s LGBTQ+ community.
As Harvey himself said, “You’ve got to give them hope.” The Harvey Milk Visibility Project carries that message forward honoring those who came before, uplifting those working today, and inspiring future generations to live authentically and visibly in Utah and beyond.
