Tyler Glenn

Finding Freedom in Faith, Music, and Identity

Tyler Glenn, best known as the lead singer and keyboardist of the chart-topping band Neon Trees, built a career on catchy anthems and electrifying performances. With hits like “Animal” and “Everybody Talks,” the Utah-based group became a national sensation in the early 2010s. But behind the spotlight, Glenn was navigating a more personal journey—one that would ultimately reshape his music, his faith, and his sense of self.

Born in Temecula, California in 1983, Glenn grew up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and later served a mission in Nebraska. In 2005, he moved to Provo, Utah, where Neon Trees was officially formed with longtime collaborator Chris Allen, bassist Branden Campbell, and drummer Elaine Bradley. By 2009, the band had signed with Mercury Records and soon broke into the mainstream. Yet even as Glenn’s star rose, he carried a secret he could no longer contain.

In 2014, Glenn came out as gay in a Rolling Stone interview, becoming one of the first openly queer pop stars to emerge from the Mormon community. His announcement was groundbreaking but also painful, as it coincided with his departure from the LDS Church. Two years later, he released his solo album Excommunication, a raw exploration of heartbreak, faith crisis, and the freedom of living authentically. The project stirred controversy but also cemented Glenn’s reputation as a fearless truth-teller.

Since then, Glenn has continued to evolve as both an artist and an advocate. He returned to the stage with Neon Trees in 2019, bringing with him a deeper sense of honesty and creative freedom. His brief turn on Broadway in Kinky Boots further highlighted his versatility and commitment to storytelling through music. Today, Glenn uses his platform not only to entertain but also to champion visibility, resilience, and the courage it takes to live openly.

For Tyler Glenn, music has always been about more than performance—it is a vehicle for truth, liberation, and connection. His journey from Provo basements to international stages reflects not only the power of pop music but also the enduring strength of authenticity.
