Troy has been an advocate for LGBTQ rights for over two decades. He served as Executive Director of Equality Utah for eleven years, where his team passed historic LGBTQ non-discrimination protections (2015), an inclusive hate crimes law (2019), and unanimously banned conversion therapy for minors (2023). In 2016, Troy worked alongside the Salt Lake City Council to rename 900 S “Harvey Milk Blvd”. In 2010, the Salt Lake Tribune dubbed Troy, “The Gay Mayor of SLC”.
